I love Walmart. Not only can I pick up my groceries for the week, but I can grab some socks for my kids, put a bag of birdseed in the cart for my parakeets and even purchase a tent if I ever feel the desire to go camping (which isn’t very likely). If the apocalypse happens, I hope I’m in a Walmart where I know I can survive for years.
Walmart also has an amazing variety of products to help manage your health. If you have diabetes, have you noticed their selection of glucose monitor kits? Diabetes can be difficult to manage, so it is important to have the right device to keep you feeling your best. Here are some of the best glucose monitor systems available at Walmart (in store and online).
This is one of the most preferred systems on the market. This meter beeps when you’ve added enough blood on the test strip and you have 60 seconds to add more if you didn’t get it right the first time. It’s extremely reliable and is consistently one of the most accurate systems available. It’s easy to use, has a backlit screen for readability, the test strip port has a small light for ease of use and it has storage capabilities for up to 400 readings. It also has a USB port so you can upload your data to send to your doctor when needed. The only con is that users have complained that the lancing needles need to be changed manually. It costs around $23.00.
This is one of the best options with the lowest price (approximately $20). It’s amazing that something so inexpensive can add notes to your glucose readings (like if you took your blood test before or after meals or when you were fasting) and even has programmable reminders. This monitor has messages in 14 languages (including English and Spanish) and is equipped with a micro USB port so you can upload your data to your doctor. One con posted by users was that they wished it took AA batteries instead of harder to find and more expensive round 3 volt batteries.
This compact monitor is very popular and automatically logs your results to your smartphone with its free app. It gives you super fast readings and requires minimal blood for each test. It also has a USB port to upload your test result history. One patient raved, “ I will never use any other meter!!!!!” This device costs about $25.
Accu-Chek Aviva Plus (estimated price is around $30) is like the bigger brother to the above system and is another great glucometer from this popular brand. It’s known to be incredibly accurate and it comes with 500-reading memory, the ability to calculate average readings and before-and after-meal notations and it has four customizable alerts.
Sometimes older patients have vision problems and it can be difficult to use a monitor with a small screen. The Prodigy Voice talks you through the process of testing your glucose levels and you can even plug in headphones if you want to be more discreet. It has good memory storage and a button that can repeat the directions. The downside is that it’s almost twice the cost of the other monitors on the market at around $40 and up.
